Research Mythbusting

  • You don't have to commit to a lengthy research project to "do research." Start small!
  • Research starts with students developing a guiding question, not a set thesis. Students should develop a thesis as they analyze information that they gather.
  • The final product does not have to be a paper. Explore other options for students to present findings.
  • You don't have to use MLA format, but talk to students about the importance of attribution and require them to attribute information sources in some way.
  • Research is not just for the humanities. Research should be taught across the curriculum, particularly since there are discipline-specific aspects of research and scholarly discourse.
  • This is not a definitive guide! Please share your ideas and suggestions to make this toolkit better!
